The things we do...

The Entrance to the Fremantle Prison

I had a great day today. When I was at school last week one of the teacher's told me they were going on an excursion to Fremantle Prison. The ever enthusiastic me asked if I could come along as a 'parent helper'...never mind I have no kids in primary school, or at school for that matter! So along I went... yep I went to 'work' for the fun of it ...

We had the ever exciting/noisy bus trip, 50 minutes worth, to get there, and of course back again. Once there we had our 'recess' snack and in we went.

What a cold and dreary place, imagine that it would be a bonzer of a sauna in summer! We had a guided tour and had a great look around the place.

A hallway showing the cell doorways,
notice the netting above...to catch fallen objects! Apparently these were mostly full toilet buckets...yuck.

Just before the prison closed in 1991, the prisoners were allowed to put art onto the walls of their cells... here are a couple of examples.
Previous to this they were not allowed to put anything on the walls.

After the prison we went to the round house...WA's oldest building, built in 1831... that was pretty good to see too. They let off the old canon every day at 1pm...it is so loud! Jumped out of my skin when it was let off!!

So a good day was had by all...5 adults and 50 students!

Tour of the Fremantle Prison (day tour sounds good, night tour too eerie)is on my must to do list along with the Brothels in Kalgoorlie.

PS: How come I have to do a word verification every time I add a comment on your blog - WT???
